Homesteading Skills for Survival and Employment

Animal Care - feeding, watering, grooming. Using products from animals (cheese, soap, eggs for scones)

Chickens - feeding & watering, collecting and giving scraps, collecting/washing eggs, cleaning coops

Goats - feeding, watering, milking, husbandry, cleaning stalls, grooming

Farm Building - building and maintenance of animal coops, sheds, paddocks plus other farm outbuildings

Farm Store - animal products, baked goods, produce from our garden and handmade items by students

Food Preparation & Menu Planning - Social Tea (school year) and Summer Breakfast Café. Baking in our wood burning brick oven: bread, pizza, scones for our Social Teas, Summer Breakfast Cafés and for sale in the Farm Store. Skills include research/create recipes & plan menu items, food shop. Job categories consist of Chef, Server, Host/Hostess, Dishwasher, Set-up/clean-up of food service, Cashier, Floral Arrangement

Canning - hand picked fruit that we processed into jam and preserves.

Cheese Making - using our goats' milk we make chèvre, for age blanc goat cheese

Grain Grinding - rolling oats for granola, bread and oatmeal. Grinding flour for bread and pizza dough

Yogurt Making - using our goats' milk

Horticulture - planting, harvesting, herbs, drying, composting, soil management, gardening outside and in
our greenhouses -
Landscaping/Property Maintenance - using tools like blowers, rakes, brooms, push mowers, and other
manual tools and machinery. Pool Maintenance -
Soap Making - using our goat's milk soap and our herbs grown & dried with grinded oats

Volunteering - soup kitchens, environmental clean up

Weaving - weaving on floor looms, inkle loom, rigid heddles to make yoga eye pad pillow covers, shopping bags plus straps and goat collars

Woodworking - building of birdhouses, milking stands, chicken coops and various projects

Ceramics- manipulating, sculpting, creating soap dishes, vases, a variety of bowls, ornaments and more.
